A Case of Displacement
An installation at the 1997 Society
of Scottish Artists exhibition at the R.S.A., The Mound, Edinburgh.
Toured to Philadelphia in summer 1998.This page is the artist's introductory
statement.
The work is divided into two sections.
-
The first arrangement - the subject - consists of a large
case, within which lie sixteen smaller boxes, symbolising a spiritual dissection
of the persona non grata: the displaced, the homeless, the refugee, carrying
possessions in a variety of boxes.
-
The second arrangement - the object
- appears on the computer monitor, displaying “A Case of Displacement”
as a computer file, remorselessly and impersonally probing each of the
sixteen aspects of the subject.
I have chosen 16 boxes as this is a number of mathematical
perfection which is inherent in computer design.
